You know how penpals were such a big thing growing up? Those born before the 90's would know this. But for those of you who are unfamiliar with this term 'penpal', it's what school children were encouraged to do pre internet days. You'd open a magazine or newspaper (family section of course) and there'd be a column featuring 'profiles' of other school children, including their addresses. Those who were interested in making a friend from another city/state/country could send letters to these children and thus, become penpals.
Thinking about it now, this would probably not be such a good idea in today's day and age. But that was what it felt like though with Des and Shireen. They first got in touch with Richelle to plan their wedding at the Westin almost a year ago and in the months of communication, both parties struck up a fond friendship. As the actual date approached, the heat turned way up for us to create Shireen's dream Twilight inspired wedding.
For the 3% of you who have not watched Twilight, this was the wedding Bella nervously walked into to officiate her vampire human union with Eddie boy.
We wanted to recreate a similar feel for the couple, at the same time taking into account the challenges of Langkawi's unpredictable October wedding, so it was decided that the theme would be adapted for the ballroom reception. As for the ceremony, the idea was to keep it fresh and elegant with wood logs and sweet hydrangeas. The weather was pretty much wet the days running up to the wedding, so it wasn't a surprise that on the day itself there was rain too (thank you disposable rain ponchos!). Thankfully the rain stopped only half an hour before the ceremony itself, phew!
From working in the rain, to nights that morphed into 6am mornings, the whole process was challenging but as people call it, a real labour of love. We worked really hard to bring Shireen and Des's wedding mood board into life, so please do enjoy these gorgeous shots taken from the wedding day :)
As you can see, it was a little overcast that day but we think that added a nice moody effect to a romantic evening.
Here's a close up of the wedding arch...
We had this custom made for the couple and believe it or not, it actually flew all the way back to Perth with them too.
We'd like to thank the Westin team for allowing us to start 2 days early setting up in the ballroom and also to our own Darling team for the amazing hours and effort put in. Last but not least, to Des and Shireen, for the patience, the Tim Tams and what we hope will be a lasting long distance friendship. Have a blessed and beautiful life, guys!
